The Malespine® lozenge: a history rooted in Lourdes, at the sources of Holy Water

History

In 1887, Pierre-Élie Malespine, a pharmacist graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy of Toulouse, acquired the rights to the Vallet & Compagnie house to create lozenges made with water from the Massabielle spring. He first established production at 9 Place du Champ Commun in Lourdes, before moving into the Deluc house — the former refuge of the Soubirous family itself.

In 1888, during the Jubilee year, he presented Pope Leo XIII with a gold box filled with his lozenges. On January 26, 1888, the Vatican granted its apostolic blessing: “Summus Pontifex petitam benedictionem apostolicam benigne impertiri dignatus est.” — “The Sovereign Pontiff has graciously granted the requested apostolic blessing.”

In 1898, Malespine lozenges were awarded the Gold Medal at the Lourdes Exhibition — a distinction whose original diploma is still preserved today. Documented in 2017 in the Revue d’histoire de la pharmacie (academic source), Malespine is the only surviving confectionery brand using Lourdes water that originated in the 19th century.

Since 1887, the Malespine brand has never ceased to be produced using Lourdes water.

This lozenge, whose original version was mint-flavored, is thus imbued with Lourdes water and marked on the back with a Virgin, recalling its origin and all the symbolism it carries.

Blessing of the Malespine Lozenges by Pope Leo XIII

Die 26 Januarii 1888 - « Summus Pontifex petitam benedictionem apostolicam benigne impertiri dignatus est. »

The Malespine Lozenge, the only authentic lozenge with Lourdes water

The lozenge created by Mr. Malespine was the first and remains the only lozenge made with Lourdes holy water, benefiting from official authorization from the Lourdes Sanctuary. As early as 1888, Mr. Malespine obtained the papal blessing of Pope Leo XIII after presenting him with a gold box filled with lozenges. In that jubilee year, they became the must-have souvenir to bring back... In 1898, the lozenges won a Gold Medal at the Lourdes Exposition.

Malespine® lozenges, a french production

A centuries-old craft

Malespine lozenges are hand-crafted and produced in France. They are made up just with few natural ingredients: sugar, magnesium salts, natural flavors, a bit of glucose syrup, and of course, Lourdes water.

They carry within them the history and protection of the 'Lady' of Lourdes.

Malespine® lozenges: tasting formats

The lozenges come in 3 flavors: mint (with or without sugar), anise, and lemon. Discover the complete range of Malespine lozenges, available in bags or in blue metal tins, reminiscent of the Virgin color.
